Jobs for 14 Year Olds: Getting Ahead (Companies that Accept Kids)

jobs for 14 year olds

First of all, we’d like to say congratulations! Most high school sophomores are unlike you; they’re not researching jobs for 14 year olds. Instead, they’re listening to their iPods or binge watching How I Met Your Mother on Netflix.

That said, it may seem tricky to get a job if you’re 14 years old. Chances are, your friends and your parents have suggested babysitting, dog walking or something similar. We understand that you want a real job – one which will give you a paycheck and a few benefits.

There are companies which will offer jobs for 14 year olds, but there are a few things you’ll need to know first. Here’s what you’ll need to do before you start to apply.

Jobs For 14 Year Olds: The Worker Permit

We know you’ve heard it before. When you’re 14, school comes first. That’s why most states have made it impossible to get a job without your parents’ permission. But, assuming you’ve got their blessing, it’s easy to get working papers.

Let’s talk about New York State, just to give you a general idea. If you’re in NY, you’ll first need to go to your school’s guidance counselor. He or she will give you a form to fill out: it’s an application for a worker’s permit. Fill that out, then bring it home and have your parents sign the form.

Bring the application back to your guidance counselor, and she’ll sign it. Be warned: you’ll probably get a lecture about how school is important, and it’s more critical that you get good grades than a paycheck.

Listen to her. She’s right.

Once she’s signed the application, make sure you’ve had a physical within the past 12 months. You’ll need a note from your doctor, as well as some proof of ID, like a birth certificate or a state ID card. Got all that? You’re all set! You’re ready to begin applying to jobs!

Restrictions on Jobs for 14 Year Olds

There are very few jobs that you cannot do as a 14 year old. You’re clearly not going to end up in a bar, casino or as an apprentice to anything other than a basic trade. Nor are you going to make much money (although we did recently hear from someone who worked for Savannah, Georgia premises liability injury lawyer and earned a pretty penny doing very little).

However, the time you spend at work will be limited by labor standards. Depending on your state, you may not be able to work past 8 or 9 at night. You’ll also have daily and weekly restrictions as to the number of hours you work.

During the summer months, these restrictions are more relaxed. You’ll be able to work an 8-hour day in most states, up to 40 hours per week. Sorry, you won’t be able to work overtime just yet. You can, however, work holidays, and most places are required to give you holiday pay. That can be as much as double time and a half! You’ll have to check with your supervisor about their policies.

Alright, so are you ready to get started? Here are some of the biggest companies which have available jobs for 14 year olds.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell allows 14 year olds to work within the company. There may be a few restrictions, though. For example, using a fry machine may be a no-no for young workers. Unfortunately, you may be given the job of bussing tables or mopping floors. But hey, it’s a paycheck, right?

Burger King

Like Taco Bell, Burger King offers jobs to 14 year olds. Bring your working papers with you, and fill out an application in the store. What’s more is that you’ll get free or discounted meals while you work.

If you’re looking for a job that doesn’t require serving up fast food, check out Hallmark. Hallmark stores hire people as young as 14, with proper papers and identification.

Love kids? Love stuffed animals? Build-a-Bear may be a good bet for you. You can help little kids create the stuffed friend of their dreams at as young as 14 years old.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Again, you may have restrictions as to what you can do at Dunkin’ Donuts. Fryers are off limits, and the coffee may be as well. Check with the manager for more information when you apply.

Hobby Lobby

Every crafter’s dream job, Hobby Lobby has jobs for 14 year olds. You’ll likely be in charge of restocking shelves and other tasks, but you’ll get great discounts on art supplies. Plus, they’re closed on Sunday. Guaranteed day off!

Don’t expect to be slicing meat or peddling wine, but Kroger has some great jobs for 14 year olds. For example, you can work in the florist department, or even help out in the pharmacy. Kroger offers flexible scheduling, too, so you’ll be able to get your schoolwork done.

You can work at Justice whether you’re male or female. But if you like girls’ fashion, this is a great job for you! Justice used to be called Limited, Too. It’s an awesome store with great clothes. What’s even better is that you get a discount on those clothes. Sometimes your friends and family do, too!

McDonald’s is fast food, too, but jobs are easy to get within the company. The turnover is high, so there’s almost always an open position. Check with the local manager for more information.

Applying to Jobs for 14 Year Olds

When you’re 14 and applying to work, it may seem that the odds are stacked against you. So many older people with more flexible schedules are applying for those same jobs.

Don’t be discouraged, though. Employers will love the fact that you’ve got a great work ethic at such a young age. Not all kids do, and it’s very admirable.

Put your best foot forward. Show up to apply for a job with a school transcript in your hand, and show those employers that you’ve got smarts and the dedication which will benefit the company. Show them your personality, too. Smile!

Finding jobs for 14 year olds isn’t as tricky as it may seem. State government lets you do almost anything, and you don’t have to resort to washing cars or setting up a lemonade stand.
