Looking for a job in education? Look no further. ISBE jobs may be for you. On North Central Careers, we typically cover job opportunities in the New England region. But every now and then, we like to explore other opportunities which we think you may like to pursue.

ISBE is the Illinois State Board of Education, and they currently have quite a few job openings. Obviously, it’s not a commutable distance from New York or New England as a whole, but if you’re interested in relocating, you may have a few good opportunities at ISBE. Read on for more information about ISBE jobs and how to apply.

ISBE Careers

Careers with ISBE may be either Federal or State positions. Either way, you’re going to have all the benefits which government employees enjoy. To get started with ISBE jobs, it’s going to be helpful to be involved with the Board of Education. Are you a parent of a child in public school? Being involved at a local level is going to greatly increase your chances of getting a job.

Careers with ISBE include a wide range of positions. Grant Monitors are in high demand, and there are also positions for consultants. For example, if you’ve got experience with healthcare administration, consider a job with the Student Wellness department.

Of course, you don’t have to be an educator to be considered for ISBE jobs. There are openings for IT professionals, receptionists and others as well. Still in college? Consider applying for the ISBE internship program. You’ll be placed in a position within the agency where you’ll be working in a capacity relevant to your degree. The internship is unpaid, but will increase your chances of being hired on at a later time.

What Does ISBE Pay?

The internships with ISBE are unpaid, but the jobs themselves pay very well. To begin, we’ve already mentioned the employee benefits. Government jobs include health, vision and dental insurance. They also provide 401k and other savings options. Finally, you’ll get flexible time off and paid holiday. There are other perks to being a government employee, such as membership in great credit unions. In short, if you can get a government job, you’re going to like the benefits.

The rate of pay that you’ll receive when you have a job with the Illinois State Board of Education will vary depending upon your position. A consultant for the IEP program will make, on average, $3,900 per month. The same is true for a grant monitor. A receptionist can expect to earn a monthly salary of about $2,500. Other positions, such as those in the legal department, will provide compensation based on experience.

ISBE Application

The salary that you’ll receive with an ISBE job in concert with the benefits makes these positions highly sought after. Your application will be up against hundreds of others. So how do you make sure that your application stands out?

First of all, we suggested that you become involved with ISBE at a local level. Citizens are permitted to attend most ISBE board meetings, particularly those which are local to one district. If you’ve lived in the area for a while, chances are that you know someone who serves on the board. Let them know that you’re interested in applying with the company; they may be able to point you in the right direction, or to put in a good word for you.

You should also look to become involved in the Illinois State Board of Education’s community events. Periodically throughout the year, the board will host events and webinars. Sign up for these, and begin networking early. Of course, your engagement with board members won’t guarantee you a job. You’re also going to need to apply!

You can search and apply for ISBE jobs via the website. You’ll need to create a user account, but with that one account you may apply for any of the ISBE jobs. Include a current resume or CV, and be sure to attach a cover letter. As always, follow up with a phone call to the hiring manager and be sure to ask to schedule an interview.

Is ISBE Hiring?

ISBE is currently hiring for quite a few positions. Those positions are, for the most part, quite specialized, and you’ll need to have a college degree and a bit of experience in order to be considered. There are obviously some jobs which are degree specific. You can’t get a job as legal counsel without a law degree, for example. But there are also a large number of jobs which don’t require a degree in a specialized field.

A receptionist position, as one example, will require that you have a college degree, but it’s not mandatory that that degree be in education. For all ISBE jobs, you’ll need a clean criminal record, and usually will need to pass a credit check as well. You’re going to need to be at least 18 years old, and to be a legal United States citizen.

It’s not unheard of for ISBE employees to have started at a local position. Again, you don’t have to be an educator in order to get a job with the school system. Public school jobs include custodial staff, food service management and other descriptions. These are called “certified” jobs, as opposed to the “licensed” teaching positions. Beginning your job search with your local public or charter school is a good idea if you’d like to get your foot in the door.

If you’re interested in jobs like ISBE jobs but don’t foresee a move to the Illinois area, you can find similar jobs in the New York, Connecticut and New Jersey area. All of these states have a board of education, and you can find job listings on the state website for the area where you’d like to work.

ISBE jobs are a great opportunity if you’re interested in becoming involved in the educational community. You don’t need a teaching license to get a job there, and they pay is great. If you’re looking for a job opportunity in the Illinois area, be sure to check out the ISBE website.
